I collect quotes (probably not a big surprise) but they often dissipate away (out of sight, out of mind) before I have a chance to incorporate them into something. But I ran across a few over the weekend I wanted to share below.
The Your Personal Horoscope 2005 was lying on the B&N cafe table I occupied yesterday. (Bootstrapper's tip: Enjoy books at bookstore cafes and libraries and only buy those that really call you or repel you.) And I had a laugh reading this:
To deprive a Gemini of conversation, or of books and magazines, is cruel and unusual punishment.
We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run over. - Aneurin Bevan
The world is made of stories, not atoms. - Muriel Rukeyser
Look sharply after your thoughts. They come unlooked for, like a new bird seen in your trees, and if you turn to your usual task, disappear. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
If it is not seen in the present, it cannot be seen at all. - Paul Tillich
Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble logical diagram once recorded will not die. - Daniel H. Burnham
[And my favorite:] There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. - Martha Graham
