Good thought-provoking stuff. I suppose it depends what we mean by teach. I suspect that empathy is often learnt experientially, without explicit explanation. When I experience empathy, I think I become more empathetic.

have you ever read philip k dicks "do androids dream of electric sheep?" i just finished it a couple days ago, and pretty much the whole premise of the book is empathy is what makes us human. its really good.
